‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ getting a movie in 2018, being developed by Sony

Sonic The Hedgehog hasn’t had the best of times recently. Despite a reboot and several attempts to branch the franchise out to television – the series has endured a pretty miserable time. This morning though we’ve heard a surprise announcement that Sega and Sony are coming together to create a Sonic movie.

The news has been confirmed by Sega president and CEO Hajime Satomi who had the following to say about the upcoming movie;

“Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic The Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.”

It’s not known if the recent Sonic reboot (The ill-fated Sonic Boom canon) will feature into this or if this will be yet another continuity of the popular video game character. Yesterday the official Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter account hinted that French musician Madeon might on board to write the movies music with this very cryptic tweet;

It’s a very interesting direction to take a franchise that has been long suffering. We would imagine there would be a game of some kind coming alongside this (As if Sega wouldn’t wake advantage of this somehow). Hopefully it’s better than Sonic Boom.
