WWE announces Global Cruiserweight Series – Coming July 2016

There have been rumours floating around in recent times about WWE looking to involve Cruiserweights more in WWE Network programming and now WWE has formally announced their intention to do so – with the inaugural Global Cruiserweight Series.

The series will invite cruiserweights from all over the world to compete in a 10 week series, at Fall Sail University, to engage in the competition. The WWE press release states;

For the first time ever, WWE invites cruiserweights from all over the world to compete in the inaugural Global Cruiserweight Series. Thirty-two of the greatest in-ring competitors under 205 lbs. will descend upon Full Sail University in Orlando, Fla., and collide for 10 weeks to earn the right to call themselves the best cruiserweight in the world.

32 competitors will be invited to compete in total – it’s not known if it will be pre-recorded or will be presented live. We imagine the former as it would follow an NXT schedule. The competition will be open to wrestlers under 205lbs.

Personally we’d love to see this become a big thing for The Network – perhaps even see the rise of the Cruiserweight division again? Probably not though, Vince apparently isn’t a fan of the small guys.
